Although they have been in America at least as far back as
colonial times, it was not until the 20th century that
African Americans gained a respectable presence in America's
history books.

The Father of "Black American History" is Carter G. Woodson
(1875-1950), who was born to parents who had been slaves.
Neither of his parents knew how to read or write. Woodson
himself spent his childhood working in the Kentucky coal
mines and enrolled in high school at the age of twenty. He
went all the way to a Ph.D. from Harvard. During his study
and his work as a teacher, he was disturbed that none of the
schools taught the history of Black Americans.
It all started as Woodson chose the second week of February
for "Negro History Week" because it marks the birthdays of
two men who greatly influenced the black American
population, Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.
Nowadays February is the "Black American History Day," and
there are events throughout America to celebrate the month.
Though this is already the third week of the Black American
History Month, it's not too late. See the remaining events
