"Eleven Reasons to Spend Your Valentine's Day Getting
Recharged in Duluth,"

by Susan Dunn, MA, The EQ Coach

1. Get ready to jumpstart your romance in the land where the
magnetic field causes ships' compasses to malfunction, and
causes colors to dance in the sky, and where things are,
well, just wired differently. Snap, crackle, pop!

Yes there's snow. Yes it's cold. Good snuggling weather.

2. Plan to drive up there from Minneapolis-St. Paul airport
at dark and that thing you see frozen like a deer in the
headlights might be a wolf.

You're in the heart of wild wolf country! Moonlight, cold, a
howl . a bit Dr. Zhivagoish, and guaranteed to charge up the
AC/DC. Your chance to be the hero, your chance to cling .
your choice.

Later visit International Wolf Center http://www.wolf.org/
in Ely.

3. Sparks

The first thing you'll notice as you enter Duluth, besides
the spectacular Aerial Lift Bridge, is the magnetic pull of
Lake Superior, the biggest fresh water lake in the world.
You can feel the electricity. You're near the iron range.

4. Bluefin Bay - voted "best romantic resort," and "most
romantic resort in Minnesota," and "Minnesota's favorite
resort restaurant."

With room overlooking Lake, your own fireplace and private
Jacuzzi, you'll be sticking together like two pairs of
nylons shorts with static cling. Dinner menu includes Fresh
Lake Superior Bluefin broiled.

5. If you aren't the lead dog, you can kiss your honey!

Take a Mushing Day Trip
http://www.dogmushing.com/rides.html, driving your own
team of Huskies. Greeted with a heated wall tent and when
you return, there's hot chocolate and cookies. Take a comfy,
cozy sleigh ride tucked inside cushioned sled bags with
sleeping bags. IN THE MOONLIGHT! Photo ops available. [P.S.
Always plenty of snow inland.]

6. Check out the lighthouses, necessary because the
compasses don't work.

Split Rock Lighthouse in Two Harbors, is a good one.
http://www.mnhs.org/places/sites/srl/images/srphotonine.jpg
In February you have to call and schedule a tour.

7. The Edmund Fitzgerald and maritime museums of shipwrecks.

The largest freighter on the Great Lakes The Edmund
Fitzgerald ( http://www.ssefo.com/photos/mhsd2.htm ) headed
out of Duluth November 9, 1975 with 26,000 tons of taconite.
Trying to make one last run for the season was a tragic
decision. Later gale force winds and 30' waves sank the
ship, killing all 29 men aboard. This was immortalized in
Gordon Lightfoot's "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald."
The bodies were never found. The water is too deep and too
cold to allow for decomposition or gasses to form.

8. Pay attention to the dress code.

It's no joke. Dress warmly, carry blankets in the car and a
kit in the trunk. Google this - "cold weather car survival
kit". If mushing, etc. here's a suggested list of clothing.

Check out driving conditions here.

9. Plenty to do, indoors and out.

Pops concert that weekend, "The Music Man" is touring,
Fitger's Brewery.. For more Valentine's events, go here .

10. Tah dah - the Northern Lights
http://science-education.pppl.gov/SummerInst/auroraborealis.jpg !

Aurora borealis, just in case you hadn't gotten enough
electricity. Can be observed any clear night (20% chance).
Best shot is Highway 11 up near International Falls.

11. Check out Naniboujou Lodge (Grand Marais) to see the
mammoth fireplace , if nothing else.
http://www.naniboujou.com/art/pics/press/old-fireplace-2.jpg

It began as a private club whose original members were
Babe Ruth, Jack Dempsey and Ring Lardner. Apparently open
weekends in the winter.
